About Pleasanton

History

Settlers here had the Riverview post office from 1883 and a stage stop at Peters’ Bridge. The Union Pacific built a branch from Boelus up the South Loup valley, and the first train arrived on March 1, 1890; the town was platted that April and named for Pleasant Valley, as settlers called this stretch of the valley. It was incorporated in 1894. A cyclone struck in 1890, three fires followed in 1892–94, an ice-jam flood in 1907 damaged the school (a brick school was built on the hill in 1909), and floods came again in 1924 and 1947; the 1947 flood washed out the railroad and ended service. The 1890 depot, still on its original foundation, was restored from 2005 to 2012 by the Pleasanton High School FBLA chapter. The population peaked at 372 in 1990. Pitcher Win Noyes was born in the Pleasanton area in 1889.
