About Gross

Gross is an incorporated village in northeastern Boyd County, on gravel roads about 8 miles north of Bristow. The 2020 census counted 3 people. Its only business, the Nebrask Inn bar and grill, closed in February 2026.

History

Gross was founded in 1893 near the center of the old Fort Randall Military Reservation. The post office opened in September 1892 as Morton and was renamed Gross on February 28, 1895, for postmaster Benjamin B. Gross, one of the first settlers, who kept a general store. The first school met in the old Fort Randall town hall, moved here. By local count the town had more than 600 people in 1904 as settlers waited to claim land in South Dakota; the census peak was 325 in 1900.

The railroad went down the Ponca Creek valley instead, and fires in 1902, 1909 and 1919 took much of the town. The high school closed during World War II, and the post office closed in 1960. In 1976 Gross billed itself as the nation's smallest incorporated village. On Main Street stand the vault of the old Gross State Bank, an old water pump and an iron boundary marker from the Fort Randall reservation.
