About Prosser

Prosser is a village of about 73 people (2020) in northern Adams County, at 2,041 feet on county roads about 12 miles west-northwest of Hastings and 6 miles northeast of Kenesaw. Its children have attended Kenesaw schools since 1980. Prosser is on Central Time.

History

Prosser grew up in 1887–88 at the end of a Missouri Pacific branch built northwest from Hastings; the first passenger train arrived on April 21, 1888. It was named for T. J. Prosser, who supervised the line’s construction, and its avenues for his children. The village was incorporated in 1907 and peaked at 163 people in 1910. Its high school closed in 1937. Christ Lutheran Church south of town kept one of the county’s last rural parochial schools. The ghost town of Hayland is about 1.6 miles south-southwest.
