About Juniata

Juniata is a village of about 744 people (2020) in Adams County, at 1,965 feet just north of US 6/34, about 6 miles west of Hastings; Spur S-1B (Juniata Avenue) leads into town. It is in the Adams Central school district, whose junior-senior high and elementary are between Juniata and Hastings, and it serves today as a commuter town for Hastings. Prairie Lake and the Thirty-Two Mile Station site are a few miles south. Juniata is on Central Time.

History

Settlers of the Michigan Colony came with the Burlington in 1871, and the town, named by the railroad for a river in Pennsylvania, was platted that November. It is the oldest town in Adams County. Juniata was elected county seat when the county was organized on December 12, 1871, and the first train arrived on June 8, 1872. In 1872 the county refused bonds for the St. Joseph & Denver City Railroad, which crossed the Burlington seven miles east and founded Hastings; Hastings won the county seat in 1877, and the records left Juniata in 1878. Juniata was incorporated in January 1880. Its high school graduated its last class in 1967.
