History
The Pioneer Town Site Company laid out the town in August 1887 on the Fremont, Elkhorn & Missouri Valley Railroad and named it Poston, for Judge George W. Post of the town-site company. Postal officials rejected the name because another Nebraska office had a similar one, so the town was renamed for Walter Q. Gresham, a federal judge who later became U.S. Secretary of State. Gresham incorporated on June 15, 1895, and peaked at 492 people in 1920. William H. Diers of Gresham was Speaker of the Nebraska Legislature in 1939.
