About Sholes

Sholes is a village of 15 people (2020) in northwestern Wayne County, at 1,736 feet about 4½ miles southeast of Randolph and 16 miles west-northwest of Wayne. The Sholes Wind Energy Center is nearby. Sholes is on Central Time.

History

The railroad came through this part of the county in 1886. In 1902 cattle feeders in northwestern Wayne County asked for a siding and stockyards to ship livestock, and Lyman Sholes, a railroad division superintendent, chose and surveyed the site, which took his name. The post office ran from 1902 to 1965. The village had its most people, 90, in 1930.
