History
Carroll began when the railroad reached the site in 1886; it was settled that October, at a spot chosen for its nearness to Deer Creek, and was first called Manning, for early settler J. R. Manning. Two stories explain the present name: the railroad’s general manager named it for Charles Carroll of Carrollton, the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence, or a man named Carroll settled a dispute between the railroad and local landowners and the depot sign took his name. The village had its most people, 448, in 1920.
