With 1,300 residents at the 2020 Census, Arlington holds the distinction of being Nebraska's most populous incorporated village, blending small-town character with a horticultural legacy that reaches lawns and streets across the country.

History

The site was originally platted in 1869 as "Bell Creek" when the Sioux City and Pacific Railroad extended a line to the area. To resolve confusion with another Nebraska location of the same name, the town was renamed Arlington in 1882, after Arlington, Virginia.

Marshall Nurseries

Brothers George and Chester Marshall established Marshall Brothers nursery near Arlington in 1887, incorporating it as Marshall Nurseries in 1916. Over more than a century of operation — until closing in 1994 — the business grew into a major horticultural enterprise, expanding beyond Arlington with additional locations in Omaha, Colorado Springs, and Denver, and employing over 100 people locally, including many members of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska. Marshall Nurseries supplied landscaping for the Nebraska State Capitol and the Joslyn Art Museum, won the Best Fruit Display award at the 1900 Paris World's Fair, and developed the Marshall Seedless Green Ash, a cultivar that became one of the most common green ash trees planted across the United States. A state historical marker in Arlington commemorates the nursery's legacy today.
