About Macy
Macy is an unincorporated community and census-designated place of 1,045 on US 75 in eastern Thurston County, and the seat of government of the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska. It has Umoⁿhoⁿ Nation Public Schools, the Macy campus of Nebraska Indian Community College, the Carl T. Curtis Health Education Center and Big Elk Park.
History
The Omaha lived in this region by 1750, and Lewis and Clark recorded the tribe in 1804. By the treaty of March 16, 1854, the Omaha ceded most of their land and kept a reservation around the Blackbird Hills, where they moved in 1855. The Omaha Agency and a Presbyterian mission (1856) were set up here; the name Macy is a blend of "Omaha" and "Agency," and the post office opened in 1906.
Blackbird Hill, about three miles south, is the burial place of Chief Blackbird, who died in the smallpox epidemic of 1800; William Clark climbed it on August 11, 1804. The hill is on private land and closed to the public. The Omaha Tribe's He'dewachi celebration has been held each August for more than two centuries at Little Warrior Park; the 222nd was August 27–30, 2026. Actor Rodney A. Grant was born in Macy.
