About Byron

Byron is a village of 83 on the Kansas line in southwestern Thayer County, reached by a short spur south from NE 8, about 8 miles west of Chester. The community of Harbine, Kansas, lies just across the state line.

History

The town was platted in 1877 as Harbine, in expectation of the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad's Republican Valley line, which arrived in 1880. Andreas described it in 1882 as an "embryo town" half in Nebraska and half in Kansas, named for Col. Thomas Harbine of Fairbury. In 1889 the Nebraska side was renamed Byron, because another Nebraska post office, the village of Harbine in Jefferson County, already had the name.

In 1917 Byron had a bank and a hotel on the Burlington, and a farmer strung its first telephone line in 1902. The census peak was 206 in 1930.
