History

A post office opened in the area in the 1870s, named by May Jull, daughter of Ebenezer Jull, for her family’s old home of Staplehurst, England; the town grew at its present site after the railroad came in 1879. The Deutsche Evangelisch Lutherische Zion Kirche on Marysville Road is on the National Register. In 1984 the Nebraska Semi-Pro Baseball Committee named Staplehurst the Nebraska Baseball Capital; the trophies are kept in the community hall. The population peaked at 306 in 1980. Actress Coleen Gray, of Kiss of Death, Red River and The Killing, was born here as Doris Jensen in 1922.
