History
When the Midland Pacific Railroad built from Lincoln to Seward in 1874, Hiland Fraisure platted a town at its depot and named it Germantown for its German settlers. The Germantown State Bank, incorporated in 1904, put up its stone Classical Revival building in 1920; it closed in the 1930s and now belongs to the village, which is restoring it. During World War I, with anti-German feeling high, the town took the name Garland on December 11, 1918, for Raymond Garland, the first local soldier to die in the war, of pneumonia before he reached France. The population peaked at 279 in 1920.
