About Yutan

Yutan is a city of 1,347 in eastern Saunders County, on the north side of NE 92 near the Platte River, about 24 miles west of Omaha. It has Yutan Public Schools, the public library and a sports complex, and holds Yutan Days each summer.

History

The Otoe and Missouria had a village on Clear Creek about a mile and a half southeast of town from about 1768 to 1835. The Omaha & Republican Valley Railroad platted a townsite here in 1876 and called it Clear Creek, and the Headland post office moved in. On June 6, 1884, the town was renamed for Ietan (Itan), an Otoe chief, to avoid confusion with another Clear Creek. A Burlington line from Ashland toward Sioux City crossed the town in 1905–06; the depots closed in 1954 and 1958.

The Easter Sunday tornado of March 23, 1913, which formed near Mead, struck Yutan when it had about 350 people. The town has grown with the Omaha area: from 168 people in 1890 to 1,216 in 2000 and 1,347, its highest count, in 2020.
