About Leshara

Leshara is a village of 108 in northeastern Saunders County, just north of NE 64 about 8 miles southeast of Fremont. It is the youngest town in the county.

History

The Sioux City & Western Townsite Company bought the land from Joseph Lammel in October 1905 for a station on the new line from Ashland to Sioux City, which later became part of the Burlington; special trains brought buyers to the lot sale, and the post office opened on February 27, 1906. The town was named for Petalesharo, a Pawnee chief. Its first postmaster, Ray S. Estey, came from the family that had kept the Estina post office nearby from 1869 to 1883.

The Leshara Site, a Pawnee village site, is on the National Register (location restricted). The population peaked at 133 in 1980.
