About Cedar Hill

Cedar Hill is a rural Czech Catholic community in Bohemia Township, northwestern Saunders County, about 3 miles southwest of Morse Bluff and 6 miles north of Prague. Sacred Heart Church (1880), a mission of St. George in Morse Bluff, and its cemetery remain.

History

A post office called Slavonia opened here in December 1872 under Frederic F. Doubrava and was renamed Cedar Hill in May 1874, reportedly for a cedar-covered hill; it closed in 1888. James H. Noteware, an immigration agent who advised the Czech settlers, gave 40 acres for a church. Services were held in the schoolhouse from 1873; the parish was recognized in 1879, and the 40-by-60-foot church, built with lumber hauled from Fremont, was blessed on the Feast of the Sacred Heart in 1880.

The church was enlarged with a bell tower and sanctuary in 1924. Served from Plasi until 1901 and from Prague until 1945, it has been a mission of St. George in Morse Bluff since 1955. Its original windows were restored and their Czech lettering recovered in 2014, when the parish had 26 families. It is described as possibly the only Czech Catholic congregation still worshipping in its original church.
