About Verdon

Verdon is a village of 164 in central Richardson County on US 73, about 8 miles northwest of Falls City, near the south end of NE 67. Verdon State Recreation Area, with a 45-acre spring-fed lake, is about half a mile west of town.

History

A town called Springfield was platted near here in 1856 but never grew. Verdon was platted in 1882 by John A. and Julia Hall when the Missouri Pacific built through, and people from nearby Cottage Grove moved to the new town. The railroad suggested the name, perhaps from "verdure," though the reason is not known for certain. The population peaked at 406 in 1910. Verdon shared Dawson-Verdon Public Schools with Dawson until 2004.
