About Shubert

Shubert is a village of 163 in northern Richardson County, on NE 62 just west of its end at NE 67. It is the mailing address of Indian Cave State Park, reached by NE 67 north and spur S-64E east.

History

The village began as a Burlington station on the land of Henry W. Shubert (1834–1909), a Kentuckian who came to Nebraska in 1865, bought land on the former Half-Breed Reservation, and is credited with planting the state's first commercial orchard and being the first in Nebraska to use a spraying machine and ship apples in barrels. The town was platted in 1883 on the Nebraska City branch of the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad. The population peaked at 404 in 1940.

The Prairie Union Baptist church, organized nearby in 1867, was the first congregation in this part of the county. St. Anne's Catholic church moved into Shubert after a 1940 fire destroyed the rural church about 3 miles southeast, where its cemetery remains. Shubert was part of the Southeast Nebraska Consolidated schools until they merged into HTRS in 2009.
