Shelby is a village in Polk County, Nebraska, that began life in the 1870s under the names “Cyclone” and “Arcade” before settling on its permanent name in 1880–81, honoring an official of the Omaha and Republican Valley Railway. Formally incorporated in 1885, the village grew into a thriving small rail-line community.

With 710 residents as of the 2020 Census, Shelby has produced notable natives including nuclear physicist John R. Dunning and Olympic bobsled gold medalist Curtis Tomasevicz. Its original tree-lined streets and community park continue to anchor daily life in this Polk County village.
