History

Irish families from Lindsay, Ontario, settled along Shell Creek in the 1870s, and Germans followed later that decade; a marker in the plaza on Pine Street is dedicated to the Irish settlers. The Western Town Lot Company laid out the village on November 8, 1886, on the new Fremont, Elkhorn & Missouri Valley (Chicago & North Western) branch, and it was incorporated on March 7, 1888. Franciscans organized Holy Family parish, whose church was blessed in 1895. Paul Zimmerer started what became the Lindsay Corporation in 1955. The population peaked at 490 in 1920.
