Talmage was platted on March 7, 1882, on land donated by local farmer Clark Puffer, after the Missouri Pacific Railroad's Kansas City-to-Omaha line reached the area in 1881. The village is the birthplace of film actor Anthony Dexter (born Walter Reinhold Alfred Fleischmann, 1913), and sits just west of Nebraska Highway 67, southeast of Lincoln.
