History

Johnny Bloomfield, a Scot known as “Johnny Smoker,” was the first settler on Shell Creek, and the Warren family came in 1864. Young Newman Warren helped plant a grove of cottonwoods by the creek and died at 21; when his father, Lewis Warren, later sold the town site for $2,000, he asked that the town carry his son’s name. A post office opened in 1874 at the Columbus–Oakdale stage station. Most settlers came from Norway and Sweden, and the town has called itself the “Norwegian Capital of Nebraska” since 1975. When the Fremont, Elkhorn & Missouri Valley Railroad arrived in 1886–87, the town moved to higher ground; the Western Townlot Co. platted it, naming five streets — Pike, Searle, Burrows, Hale and Bordwell — for its partners. Newman Grove was incorporated on February 9, 1888, and had its most people, 1,260, in 1920.
