Almeria Nebraska

Almeria was settled by Wess Strohl, who named the site for his wife Almeria Strohl (unrelated to the Spanish city of the same name); the unplatted settlement already had its own general store by the early 1880s. When Loup County organized in 1883, Almeria mounted a serious challenge for county seat, losing to Taylor by just two votes. Almeria had its own post office from 1884 until it closed in 1984; its local school closed in 1972.

Almeria is an unincorporated community, never having its own municipal government, and has no official Census population figure. A handful of year-round residents remain — local estimates put the number at roughly 9 to 13 people — though its general store and post office have both closed, and mail is now handled through Taylor’s carrier route. It sits about 8 to 10 miles from Taylor along Nebraska Highway 91, in quiet Loup County ranch country.
