About Wallace

Wallace is a village of 318 people (2020) on the high tableland of southwestern Lincoln County, at about 3,110 feet, where dryland and pivot-irrigated farms meet ranch country. NE 25 runs north to Sutherland and I-80 and south toward Hayes Center, and NE 23 crosses east–west toward Grant and Wellfleet. Wallace has its own K–12 school, Wallace Public School District 65R, the Faith Memorial Library, a bank and a post office. North Platte is about 29 miles northeast in a straight line but farther by road. Wallace is on Central Time.

History

Wallace was platted in 1887 when the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad built its line across the south of the county toward Sterling and Cheyenne. By 1890 it had about 300 people, three banks, two hotels and a weekly paper, the Wallace Mail. The village reached 406 people in 1930. In 1921 the Johnston Memorial Building, designed by Francis W. Fitzpatrick in Prairie School and Craftsman style, was given to the town in memory of John R. Johnston, a Pittsburgh window-glass businessman who summered here; it has been on the National Register since 1986. The country school of nearby Dickens later merged into the Wallace district.
