About Raymond

Raymond is a village of 159 people (2020) at 1,240 feet about 12 miles north-northwest of downtown Lincoln. NE 79 passes about half a mile west. Branched Oak State Recreation Area is just southwest, and two wineries and an observatory are nearby. Raymond is part of Raymond Central Public Schools. Raymond is on Central Time.

History

Settlers arrived in 1864, Oak Creek was dammed for a gristmill in 1870, and the Orlando post office opened nearby in 1878. Raymond was platted in 1880 when the railroad arrived — the 1890 gazetteer names the Union Pacific’s Omaha & Republican Valley branch — and named for I. M. Raymond. It was incorporated in 1892 and had its most people, 249, in 1920. Branched Oak Dam, finished in 1970, created the lake southwest of town.
