About Verdel

Verdel is a village of 38 on NE 12 in northwestern Knox County, about 10 miles west of Niobrara and 7 miles east of Monowi. Verdel Landing, 2 miles east and 2 miles north on Lazy River Road, is a Missouri River access with a boat ramp, restrooms and primitive camping.

History

Verdel began at its present site about 1902, when the Chicago & North Western extended its line west up the Ponca Creek valley. The name comes from the Spanish verde, "green." The population was 162 in 1910 and 1920, its peak.

The Ponca Fort Site, on a hilltop nearby, is on the National Register of Historic Places. Verdel lies along the Missouri National Recreational River, near the old Ponca homeland on Ponca Creek.
