About Venus
Venus is a former post office community in southwestern Knox County, about 8 miles north of Orchard and 15 miles southwest of Verdigre. Verdigre Creek forms nearby where its south and east branches meet. The Venus Wesleyan Church and Hope-Enterprise Cemetery are in the area.
History
Venus is named for the Roman goddess of love. The post office opened in 1880 and closed in 1959, and the store ran from 1879 to 1979. In 1890 S. L. Whitmore was postmaster and M. Adams the blacksmith.
Over the years Venus had a livery stable, a dance hall, a baseball field, a school and a Methodist church. Nearby Mars was named to go with Venus. Local accounts say the community began to fade when the post office closed.
