About Bazile Mills
Bazile Mills is an incorporated village of 24 on Bazile Creek, about 3 miles north of Creighton by county road. It has no businesses; Creighton has the nearest services and the hospital.
History
Samuel D. Brooks chose the mill site on Bazile Creek. A mill dam was built in 1873, the flour mill was finished in 1877 at a cost of about $20,000, and the town site was laid out in 1877 or 1878. George A. Brooks built a woolen mill for $15,000, described in 1882 as the first woolen mill in Nebraska. A school opened in 1876, the Knox County Times in 1881 and a creamery in 1882.
At its height Bazile Mills had about 40 homes and businesses, with a hotel, stores, a blacksmith, a livery stable, a school and Christ Lutheran Church. The village was incorporated in 1889. The railroad bypassed it, wheat farming declined in the 1890s and the mill lost water to Creighton's, and the town shrank. The 1888 hotel is now a private home.
