History
Bushnell began as Antelope Station, a stop along the Union Pacific Railroad during the late 1860s. The community was renamed Bushnell in 1887 in honor of Cornelius Bushnell, a railroad executive who played a key role in the development of the transcontinental line. The railroad shaped the town’s early growth, bringing settlers, freight traffic, and regional commerce.
Throughout the 20th century, Bushnell remained a small but steady agricultural community. Ranching and dryland farming formed the backbone of the local economy, while the town served as a service point for surrounding rural residents. Its location near the Wyoming border and along the historic railroad corridor continues to define its identity.
