History
Norden's post office opened on August 5, 1884; the first settler, Mr. Bastedo, named it for his home town of Norden, Germany, near the North Sea. In 1890 it had about 70 people, the Bank of Norden, hardware, drug and general stores, milliners and a blacksmith. The first Keya Paha County Fair was held in September 1898, and a barn dance has been at its center ever since. The Agricultural Society bought the fairground in 1921, approved a new hall in 1929, and Fred Taylor built it largely of pine, much of it hauled by wagon from the railroad at Ainsworth; the first dance was held on May 6, 1932, and Lawrence Welk played there early on. The post office closed in 1960. In July 2012 the lightning-caused Fairfield Creek fire burned through Norden and destroyed almost everything except the dance hall, the fair exhibit hall and the arena.
