About Lemoyne
Lemoyne is an unincorporated community of 44 (2020) on NE 92 along the north shore of Lake McConaughy, about 11 miles north-northwest of Ogallala (about 20 by road over Kingsley Dam). NE 92 joins NE 61 at Martin, about 6 miles east.
History
Lemoyne Jacobs came to the North Platte valley about 1875 and let the Union Pacific build its valley branch across his land. The line arrived in 1909, the town was surveyed in 1911 and named for him, and a school opened on October 2, 1915. By 1924 Lemoyne had about 200 people, a hotel, stores and a bank, and it shipped cattle to Omaha. When Kingsley Dam was built, residents moved their buildings to the hills north of the valley, beginning in the fall of 1937; by 1941 the old townsite lay under about 50 feet of water.
In the drought of 2004 the lake fell far enough to uncover Old Lemoyne's foundations for the first time in 63 years, and in 2026, with the lake below 30 percent of capacity, the foundations and the vault of the old bank were visible again. In March 2026 the Morrill Fire burned south to the north shore, and Lemoyne was evacuated overnight.
