About Emmet
Emmet is a village of 46 on US 20, about 8 miles west of O'Neill in Holt County. The Cowboy Trail passes through, but there are no traveler services in town. Emmet calls itself the "Biggest Little Haytown in the World."
History
Judge William Malloy and his son Tom platted the town on Tom's timber claim in the summer of 1882, a year after the Fremont, Elkhorn & Missouri Valley Railroad built past. It is named for Irish patriot Robert Emmet. The post office dates from 1880. The first depot was built in 1884; after it was moved to Ewing, a boxcar served until a new depot went up in 1907.
Emmet's first Fourth of July, in 1885, had a tub race on the Elkhorn, and the Emmet Echo newspaper started in 1886. A wild-hay revival after 1900 brought big hay barns, including the Emmet Hay Company's in 1908. The census peak was 130 in 1920.
