About Chambers
Chambers is a village of 288 in southern Holt County, on NE 95 five miles west of US 281 and 23 miles from O'Neill. It has a K-12 school and a clinic open on Wednesdays, and it is home to the Holt County Fair and Rodeo every August.
History
R.C. Wry homesteaded here in 1883, opened the first store and platted lots. The post office opened in 1884; W.D. Mathews of the O'Neill Frontier named it for his friend B.F. Chambers, register of the Niobrara land office. Chambers never had a railroad, so Inman was its nearest railroad and hay market. It was incorporated in 1914, and its population peaked at 396 in 1960.
The Harvest Home Festival began in 1886 and grew into the South Fork Fair, and Chambers has hosted the Holt County Fair since O'Neill dropped its fair after 1933. On February 1, 1933, Edward Adams and his sons stopped a robber at the Chambers State Bank.
