About Amelia
Amelia is an unincorporated community in southwestern Holt County, at the junction of NE 11 and NE 95, 23 miles south of Atkinson. It has a post office (ZIP 68711) and St. Joseph Catholic Church.
History
The Sammons and Pierce families settled nearby in 1883–84. I.D. Bliss, who walked 26 miles to O'Neill to carry the mail, became postmaster in the mid-1880s, and the office was named for his wife. Bliss kept a store in his home, Carl Barthel opened a blacksmith shop, and Ike Moss built a sod hotel and livery in 1886. The Amelia Journal ran from 1887 to 1895.
Amelia was known as the "city of flowing wells"; the town had neither a pump nor a windmill. Its creamery ran for nearly 30 years on steam power, stored ice cut from local lakes, and won first prize for sweet-cream butter at the 1898 Omaha Exposition. In 1914 the Methodists moved a frame church about 20 miles from Green Valley on four wagons, and St. Joseph's Catholic chapel was built in 1919.
