Culbertson Nebraska 69024

Culbertson is a village in southwestern Nebraska and was the original county seat of Hitchcock County. Founded in 1873, the same year the county itself was organized, it was named in honor of Alexander Culbertson, an Indian agent, and was incorporated in 1885.

Culbertson served as county seat for twenty years, from 1873 to 1893, and its first courthouse operated there from 1886 until the seat moved to the more centrally located Trenton in 1893, following the railroad's 1881 arrival and the wave of homesteaders it brought to the county.

The 2020 census recorded 534 residents, down slightly from 595 in 2010. Notable natives include professional jockey Steve Brooks and Carl L. Sackett, a former U.S. Attorney for Wyoming. Like much of southwestern Nebraska, Culbertson sees a wide continental climate swing, from winter lows near -38°F to summer highs above 110°F.
