About Huntley
Huntley is a village of 33 in north-central Harlan County, on the uplands between Turkey Creek and Washington townships, reached by the 4-mile S-42A spur east from US 183, about 8 miles north-northeast of Alma. Its mail comes through Republican City (ZIP 68971).
History
Settlers came to the Bainbridge neighborhood in 1873; J. W. Walker suggested the name, after his home town of Bainbridge, Ohio, and J. F. David kept the Bainbridge post office. The Kansas City & Omaha Railroad built its line from Fairfield through Minden to Huntley and Alma in 1887, and the railroad town of Huntley took Bainbridge's place; the village dates itself from 1888 and marked its centennial in 1988. In 1890 Huntley was a station of about 50 people with a store, post office, harness maker, hardware dealer and blacksmith.
The census counted 170 people in 1920 and the village's peak, 179, in 1930. The Huntley Telephone Company served the area for decades, and the Huntley school, District 70, kept grades 1–8 after dropping its high school in 1967. The railroad is gone.
