About Smithfield
Smithfield is a village of 60 people (2020) in eastern Gosper County, on NE 23 at 2,546 feet, about 7 miles east of Elwood and 7 miles west-northwest of Bertrand. St. John’s Catholic Church, a mission of All Saints parish in Holdrege, and a grain elevator stand in the village; schools and most services are in Elwood. Smithfield is on Central Time.
History
Smithfield was platted in 1890 on land owned by the Smith family as a shipping point on the Burlington; sources differ on whether it was named for Elbert and Nancy Smith or for E. B. Smith of Lexington. The post office opened on May 23, 1891. Before the railroad, the Tracyville post office (1880–86) served this part of the county. Smithfield peaked at 229 people in 1920.
