History
Reuben Lisco, born in Iowa in 1858, came to the Panhandle in 1881 as a cowboy on the Club Ranch, which became the Rush Creek Land and Stock Company; he was the first sheriff of Deuel County and later ran the company, whose ranch covered some 40,000 acres. When the Union Pacific branch reached this point in 1909, he laid out the town on his land, and the post office opened on July 26, 1909. He also headed the Lisco State Bank, now part of Points West Community Bank. The Rush Creek Ranch, founded by Thomas E. Wells in 1890 and still owned by the Wells family, remains the area’s largest employer. The Lisco State Aid Bridge over the North Platte, half a mile south, is on the National Register. In the 2000 census the Census Bureau listed the town as “Cisco”; the error was fixed by 2005.
