About Virginia

Virginia is a village of 74 in eastern Gage County, just south of NE 4, about 3 miles southeast of Filley and 13 miles east of Beatrice.

History

Landowner Ford Lewis surveyed and platted the town, and the plat was filed on May 23, 1887; it was named for Virginia Lewis, daughter of a pioneer settler. Virginia was a station on the Rock Island's Chicago–Denver line and the end of a Missouri Pacific branch from Kansas City, and Warren Barber was the first postmaster. It was incorporated about 1905, and the population peaked at 157 in 1930. The Bloody Run Bridge, which stood 4 miles southwest, was moved to Beatrice as a footbridge at Big Blue Water Park.
