Overview
Adams is a village of about 604 residents in Gage County, Nebraska, sitting roughly 25 miles south of Lincoln in a stretch of rural farmland. Though small, the community supports its own K-12 school district, a retail pharmacy, a rural health clinic, and a senior living center, and hosts two well-established annual celebrations each summer.
History
The area was first settled in 1857 by Indiana pioneer Tyler Adams. The village itself did not take shape until 1873, when local landowner John O. Adams negotiated with a railroad company that intended to run tracks through his property; the resulting townsite was platted and named for the Adams family, though sources differ on whether the community's name more directly honors Tyler or John O. Adams.
Location
Adams covers just over half a square mile in southern Gage County, at an elevation of about 1,247 feet. It sits roughly 25 miles south of Lincoln and about 10 miles northeast of Beatrice, the Gage County seat.
Community and Facilities
The village maintains a community building available for rentals and gatherings, along with a park and the usual small-town civic infrastructure. Gold Crest Retirement Center provides independent living, assisted living, and rehabilitation services on Levi Lane, with an on-site chapel serving residents. Lake Crest Pharmacy, an independent retail pharmacy on Main Street, serves Adams and the surrounding rural area. Three Protestant churches operate in the village in addition to the chapel at Gold Crest.
Education
Freeman Public Schools is the K-12 public school district serving Adams, operating Freeman Elementary and Freeman High School, home of the Falcons, from a shared campus in the village.
Health Care
Adams Primary Care, a rural health clinic on Main Street, provides family medicine appointments, and Lake Crest Pharmacy fills prescriptions locally.
Events
Adams holds its Independence Day celebration on the first Saturday of July each year, with volleyball and softball tournaments, a community barbecue, and fireworks. Each August, the village hosts Adams Community Days, a multi-day celebration organized by the ADAMS Community Foundation featuring a golf tournament, a tractor pull, and other community events.
