About Strang

Strang is a village of 34 people (2020) in southern Fillmore County, at 1,627 feet along US 81 just south of NE 74, about 8 miles south of Geneva; Spur 30D is its Main Street. The A. L. Strang windmill still stands in the middle of Main Street, and the village has two National Register buildings and the Strang Museum. Strang is on Central Time.

History

The railroad town was called Media and then Bixby before it was renamed in April 1886 for A. L. Strang, a windmill dealer who gave a windmill for the railroad’s water pump. Strang incorporated on November 3, 1886, and had 269 people at the 1890 census, its peak. Fires on October 10, 1899, and July 12, 1934, destroyed parts of the business district. The brick school was built in 1929–30 after an October 1928 fire; it taught high school until 1951 and closed in 2007.
