History

Swedish settlers from Moline, Illinois, organized the Stockholm Lutheran congregation southwest of here in 1875. The Burlington & Missouri River line reached the townsite in April 1886; the town was named for county judge Benjamin Franklin Shickley, whose son Vincent, a Burlington attorney, secured the rights-of-way and townsites. Shickley incorporated on March 20, 1888, with about 200 people, and reached its peak of 429 in 1910. The two-story brick school of 1908 still stands.
