About Dundy County

Dundy County is the southwest corner of Nebraska and the only county that touches both Kansas and Colorado; the three states meet about 6 miles west of Haigler. The Republican River begins at Haigler, where the Arikaree and the North Fork Republican come together, and the South Fork joins it just below Benkelman; Rock Creek, fed by large cold springs, cuts a canyon north of Parks. The Legislature created the county on February 27, 1873, and named it for Elmer S. Dundy, the federal judge who ruled in 1879, in Standing Bear v. Crook, that an American Indian is a "person" under the law. For a decade it was a single precinct of Hitchcock County; Texas cattle ranged here, and herds were delivered at Texas Trail Canyon east of Haigler for the drive north to Ogallala.

The Burlington & Missouri River Railroad was built up the valley in 1881–82, and the county organized in 1884 with Benkelman, the only town, as its seat. Homesteaders poured in, and by 1888 new towns at Max, Ives (now Parks), Haigler, Allston and Neel challenged Benkelman, which kept the seat after its own voters agreed to pay for a courthouse; the present one dates from 1921. In June 1884 the Nebraska State Journal printed a hoax about a flaming "celestial visitor" that supposedly crashed on a ranch 35 miles northwest of Benkelman; the paper admitted the joke in 1927. German prisoners of war worked on farms north of Benkelman in 1944. The population peaked at 5,610 in 1930.
