About Newcastle

Newcastle is a village of 272 on NE 12 in northwestern Dixon County, about 11 miles west of Ponca. NE 15 and the Vermillion–Newcastle Bridge into South Dakota are about 5 miles west. It has the Newcastle Campground, St. Peter Catholic Church and a Congregational church.

History

The Hoese brothers built the first house in the Aowa valley in 1856. Gustavus Smith called his house nearby his "new castle," and the name stuck, first spelled New Castle. Thomas Hoy opened a store in 1878 and became postmaster in 1880. The Omaha Road extended its Ponca line to New Castle in 1893, and the village incorporated that year.

Ionia, a river town northeast of here, was nearly destroyed by the 1878 flood, and its post office closed in 1907. Lewis and Clark noted a hot, smoking bluff near Ionia on August 24, 1804, now marked as the Ionia "Volcano." Newcastle's population peaked at 500 in 1920. Its school district merged with Hartington's in 2014, and the Newcastle building closed in 2021.
