The Phelps Hotel, 401 Pine St. at the northeast corner of 2nd and Pine in Big Springs, is a two-story frame hotel built in 1885 by contractor J. W. Kimball for the Edwin A. Phelps family, who opened it on Christmas Eve that year. Nicknamed the "House of Three Chimneys," it is Deuel County's oldest hotel, and Dwight D. Eisenhower is reported to have stayed here on August 6, 1919, with the Army's transcontinental motor convoy. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. It has been run as a bed and breakfast in recent years; call ahead to check whether rooms are available.
