The Dowse Sod House, 80560 Oak Grove Rd. about 3 miles south of Comstock, was built in 1900 by William R. Dowse with the help of his father-in-law, John Murphy, an experienced sod-house builder, and neighbors. The family lived in it until 1959. Dowse’s sons and the Comstock Community Club restored it, and it opened as a museum in May 1982, furnished with period pieces including the plow that broke the sod. Listed on the National Register in 1986. Call for hours: (308) 215-0365 or (308) 750-8142.
