With a population of approximately 951 residents (2020 Census), Harvard is one of Clay County's larger communities and has long served as a center of agricultural life in the region.
Harvard's economy, like much of Clay County, revolves around farming—corn, soybeans, and cattle are the mainstays of the surrounding landscape. The community offers essential services for residents of the surrounding farm country and is part of the Hastings, Nebraska Micropolitan Statistical Area. Harvard's notable residents have left marks far beyond Nebraska, from baseball's highest stage to the pop music charts.
History
Harvard was established in 1871 with the arrival of the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad, the same expansion that founded neighboring Clay County communities. The name Harvard—after the famous Massachusetts university—was chosen by early settlers, reflecting the aspiration and Eastern heritage common among Nebraska's founding generation.
Through the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Harvard grew as an agricultural service center with grain elevators, retail stores, and schools. The community weathered the droughts and economic hardships that tested Nebraska's farm towns, emerging with the resilient identity that characterizes south-central Nebraska's rural communities.
Harvard has produced some remarkable individuals. Billy Southworth, born in Harvard in 1893, became one of baseball's greatest managers, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to two World Series championships and later managing the Boston Braves. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Paul Revere, the musician who fronted the rock band Paul Revere and the Raiders, also hails from Harvard, bringing a very different kind of fame to this quiet Nebraska city.
