Irwin Nebraska
Irwin, Nebraska
Irwin is a small unincorporated community in Cherry County, Nebraska, in the Merriman Election Precinct, named in honor of Bennett Irwin, a cowboy during the open-range days who went on to become a successful rancher. The community had rail connections through the Chicago and North Western Railway.
Irwin's post office traces back to an earlier post office named Cooper, which was renamed Irwin on January 27, 1900, and continued serving the area until it was discontinued in 1954. At its peak in 1940, the community counted 21 residents.
History
Irwin was named in honor of Bennett Irwin, who worked as a cowboy during Nebraska's open-range ranching era before becoming a successful rancher in his own right. The community's post office had originally been named Cooper before being renamed Irwin on January 27, 1900; it operated for another 54 years before closing in 1954. Irwin's population peaked at 21 residents in 1940, reflecting its role as a small rail-connected ranching community rather than a large settlement.
