About Nehawka

Nehawka is a village of 173 in southeastern Cass County on Weeping Water Creek, just north of US 34 by the S-13D spur and about 13 miles south-southwest of Plattsmouth. North of the village are the Nehawka Flint Quarries, where people dug flint for thousands of years; a History Nebraska marker in Village Park tells their story.

History

The first permanent settlers came in 1855. Isaac Pollard Jr. settled on the Weeping Water after 1857, gave Nehawka and nearby Factoryville their names, and planted what History Nebraska calls the first apple orchard in Nebraska. The name comes from an Omaha–Otoe name for the creek, usually given as "rustling water." The village was platted in 1887 when the railroad arrived.

The Nehawka Woman's Club built the log-cabin library in 1933–34 with Civil Works Administration labor, using logs from a farm east of Murray; it was dedicated on September 30, 1934, closed around 1980 and was renovated by volunteers about 2021. It is on the National Register, as are the flint quarries. Gov. George L. Sheldon and Congressman Ernest M. Pollard were from Nehawka. The population peaked at 353 in 1940.
