About Murray

Murray is a village of 480 in eastern Cass County, about 6 miles south-southwest of Plattsmouth. NE 1 is its Main Street and ends at US 34/75 just east of town. Conestoga Elementary is in the village, and Conestoga Jr/Sr High is just west on NE 1.

History

Murray was platted in 1891 when the Missouri Pacific reached the site and is named for Rev. George Murray, a pioneer settler; the settlement before it was called Fairview, or Cross Roads. Rock Bluff, the river town that once rivaled Plattsmouth, was about 4 miles east-northeast, and its 1870 schoolhouse still stands. Conestoga Public Schools, based here, closed Nehawka Middle School and moved to a four-day week in 2006. Murray counted 480 people in 2020, one fewer than its 2000 peak.
