About Ulysses

Ulysses is a village of 196 people (2020) on the Big Blue River in southern Butler County, at 1,539 feet about 13 miles south-southwest of David City; State Spur 12C runs west to it from NE 15. It has the Ulysses Township Library and Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Ulysses is on Central Time.

History

Settlers took up land along the Big Blue in 1866–67, and in June 1868 J. M. Palmer and McCarty laid out the town on the south bank, with a store and a sawmill that became the Ulysses Flouring Mill. The post office opened in 1869, and the town was named for General Ulysses S. Grant. The Lincoln & Northwestern Railroad (leased to the Burlington) arrived in February 1880, and Ulysses incorporated on June 2, 1881. It reached its peak of 621 people in 1890. Chester H. Aldrich, governor of Nebraska from 1911 to 1913, was principal of the Ulysses high school before he practiced law in David City.
